The Victorian and Edwardian terraces that housed the carpet industry, around Blakebrook, Foley Park and the streets off the Stourport and Bewdley roads, have slate roofs on original timbers, with valley gutters between properties, tall chimney stacks and flashings that have been patched for a century. The work there is slates re-laid with new fixings or matched where too many are gone, valleys and chimneys done in lead, and an honest look at the timbers while the covering is off. The large postwar estates, Comberton, Habberley, Birchen Coppice and the housing at Franche and Offmore, mostly have concrete tiles on trussed rafters from the fifties to the seventies, and whole streets are reaching the end of their life together: porous tiles, perished felt, damp lofts. A re-cover with a breathable membrane, new battens and a dry ridge is the right job when both the tiles and the felt are done; fascias, soffits and guttering are the common smaller job. Building control, where it applies, is Wyre Forest District Council at present.
