Loft insulation is usually the cheapest energy improvement a house can have: up to a quarter of a home’s heat can be lost through a poorly insulated roof, and many older homes have half the depth current standards call for, or insulation that has compressed and stopped working. The part that gets skipped is ventilation. Sealing a roof without airflow is how condensation and rot start, and we see the results of that mistake regularly in our spray foam removal work. How much loft insulation should I have?
Older homes commonly have half the depth current standards call for, or insulation that has compressed and stopped working. We measure what is there at the survey and quote for topping up or replacing to current standards.
Can you re-insulate after spray foam removal?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. Once the foam is out and the timbers checked, we re-insulate to current standards with the ventilation the roof should have had in the first place. See our spray foam removal service.
Will loft insulation improve my EPC rating?
Usually yes. Loft insulation is one of the improvements EPC assessors weight most heavily, and it matters more each year as minimum standards for selling and letting tighten. We advise on the rating impact as part of the survey.
Why do you keep talking about ventilation?
Because insulation without airflow traps moisture, and that is how condensation and rot start. Every insulation quote we give includes the ventilation the roof needs, not just the material in the loft.
Why is my loft damp after insulating?
Almost always ventilation. Insulation pushed into the eaves blocks the airflow the roof relies on, and warm moist air from the house condenses on the cold underside of the tiles. We keep the eaves clear and check the ventilation at the survey. The causes are set out in condensation in the loft.
Can you insulate a loft that has had spray foam removed?
Yes, and it is the usual next step. Once the rafters are clean and inspected, mineral wool or multi-foil goes in with the ventilation designed properly, which is what the spray foam usually stopped.
