Driveways by Carter Langfold in Birmingham

Driveways in South Birmingham

Across south Birmingham the driveway job is often not a replacement at all. It is turning a front garden into somewhere to park.

Driveways on Birmingham housing

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis in Kings Heath, Moseley, Selly Oak, Harborne and Bournville were built before cars, and a large share of the work we do here is converting a small front garden into a hardstanding: dropping the kerb, taking out the wall or hedge, and laying a permeable surface that keeps the water on the plot. That last point is what keeps it inside permitted development, and on a street where the pavement floods it is also what keeps you on good terms with the neighbours. Resin bound and permeable block paving both do it; poured concrete and standard tarmac do not.

Access is the constraint here. There is often no way to get a machine to the front of a terrace, so the dig is by hand and the spoil goes out in bags, which we price honestly rather than discover on the day. Birmingham City Council handles both the planning side and the highways side, and a dropped kerb application goes to the council with a fee and a wait, which we manage for you. In Bournville, the Village Trust has design guidance on frontages, and in the Moseley and Edgbaston conservation areas the loss of a front boundary can be an issue in itself, so we check before quoting.

What we are asked for here

  • Front garden to driveway conversions on terraced streets
  • Dropped kerb applications through Birmingham City Council
  • Permeable resin bound and block paving to stay within permitted development
  • Hand-dig groundworks where there is no machine access

Planning and building control

Planning and building control are handled by Birmingham City Council. The city has a large number of conservation areas, so external changes are not always permitted development.

The work

What it looks like on site

Completed resin bound driveway in a light cream aggregate with a charcoal block paved border and brick gate pillars
Resin bound, finished: seamless, permeable, with a block paved edge to hold it.
Tarmac driveway being laid, hot tarmac spread and compacted with a roller against kerb edging already set
Tarmac going down once the base is right.
Driveway excavated down to the sub-base with a compactor plate on the stone and levels being measured
The dig, the compacted base and the levels: what decides the lifespan.

Questions

Driveways in Birmingham, answered straight

Can I turn my front garden into a drive in Birmingham?

Usually, if the surface is permeable or drains within the plot and the kerb can be dropped safely. Conservation areas and Bournville Village Trust guidance can add conditions. We check the address before we quote.

How long does a dropped kerb take with Birmingham City Council?

The application and the council inspection take longer than the driveway itself, often several weeks. We submit it early so the kerb is ready when the drive is.

Why is a terrace driveway priced differently?

Access. With no side entrance, everything comes out through the front by hand and goes into bags rather than a skip. It is more labour, and we would rather price it truthfully than surprise you.
